Root Canals

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes the infected or damaged pulp from the root of a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged, it can cause pain, swelling, and infection. A root canal can help to relieve these symptoms and save the tooth.

How is a root canal performed?
A root canal is performed by a dentist or endodontist, a dentist who specializes in root canals. The procedure usually takes one to two appointments. During the first appointment, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. Then, they will make a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp. The dentist will use special tools to remove the infected or damaged pulp. Once the pulp has been removed, the dentist will clean and disinfect the root canals. Then, they will fill and seal the root canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha.

What are the risks of a root canal?
The risks of a root canal are relatively low. However, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, and pain. In rare cases, a root canal can damage the tooth or the surrounding bone.
What are the benefits of a root canal?
The benefits of a root canal include:
• Pain relief
• Prevention of infection
• Preservation of the tooth

What should I expect after a root canal?
After a root canal, you may experience some discomfort. Your dentist may prescribe pain medication to help you manage the pain. You should also avoid chewing on the tooth that has had a root canal until it has fully healed.

How long does it take for a root canal to heal?
It usually takes about two weeks for a root canal to heal. However, some people may experience some discomfort for up to six weeks.

Is a root canal covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage for root canals varies depending on the insurance plan. Some plans cover the entire cost of the procedure, while others only cover a portion of the cost. It is important to check with your insurance company to find out how much of the cost of a root canal will be covered.
If you are experiencing pain, swelling, or infection in a tooth, it is important to see a dentist or endodontist as soon as possible. A root canal can help to relieve these symptoms and save the tooth.
